When I first started riding a bike (virago), my dad wasn’t impressed at the idea of his little girl riding bikes. But……..what would you expect when I spent most of time following him around the yard watching him welding, working with tractors, lawnmowers and all sorts of machines. To my surprise years later I would find an old black and white photo of my Dad with his old James motorcycle, so I guess that’s where I get my love of bikes and more importantly, Dad came around to the idea that his “Daughter is a Biker” – It’s in the blood!!
Rallies have been a big part of my life for nearly 20 years where I have made lots of friends from all corners of Ireland, some interesting characters who are like family to me. In 2011, I got myself a Bandit 600. For two years I made great memories at various rallies, bike runs and weekend trips to Killarney for bike fest etc.
Recessions, College, family commitments and everyday challenges in life meant I had to sell my Bandit but I still got to enjoy the odd rally and bike event but as a
pillion on my husband Stephen’s bike.
To my surprise one day, I came home from a weekend away to find Stephen and Tom Lowe standing in the yard with a Fazer 400. She was a non-runner and in need of some TLC but it was love at first sight. I was so excited at the thought of getting back on the road. Many a cold night was spent in our shed working on the bike (including poor Tom), but we didn’t give up and finally in 2019 she was road worthy.
Watching Stephen and Tom working
on the Fazer got my interested in how things work on the bike. Which lead me to
becoming a member of Bikers Shed, a few months later I did my Motorcycle
Maintenance Course. Because of Bikers Shed I now take great pride in being able
to maintain my bike which has given my great confidence.
Over the months, I have made friends with lots of bikers and
more importantly some female bikers. A lot of Female Bikers have agreed that
it’s a great place to meet up, share experiences and learn.
